Planning Your Honeymoon? Here’s What Most Couples Wish They’d Known Before Booking

Your wedding day is going to be everything. And then — just like that — it’s over.

The flowers get packed up. The dress goes into a box. The guests fly home. And the two of you? You finally get to exhale.

That exhale has a name. It’s called your honeymoon — and in my opinion, it might just be the best part of this whole beautiful chapter.

Your honeymoon is the first trip you’ll ever take as a married couple, and it has a way of living in your memory forever.

Lean in… I’ve got some thoughts to make sure it’s extraordinary.

Start With How You Want to Feel — Not Where You Want to Go

My instinct tells me you already have a destination in mind. Maybe it’s been living on a Pinterest board for years. Maybe a friend just came back from somewhere incredible and now you can’t stop thinking about it.

Here’s the question I always ask first: “How do you want to feel when you get there?”

It sounds simple — but that one shift changes everything. Because a honeymoon isn’t really about a place. It’s about what that place makes possible. The unhurried mornings. The candlelit dinners with no agenda. The feeling of being completely present with each other for the first time in what might feel like months.

Some couples light up at the idea of turquoise water and zero itinerary. Others want centuries of history, vineyards, and castles, and a different city every few days. Some want a combination of both — and yes, that’s possible too.

Before we ever talk destinations, I want to uncover how you want your honeymoon to feel. Adventurous or luxuriously lazy? Immersive or relaxed? Champagne on a private balcony or umbrella drinks on the beach?

That conversation is really where the real planning begins.

Book the Honeymoon Before You Book the Band

I get it — the venue needs to be booked. The dress needs to be found. The guest list needs to be negotiated. And the honeymoon feels like something you can circle back to later.

If I could offer one golden nugget of advice, it would be this: start planning your honeymoon sooner than you think.

The most sought-after resorts, the room categories with the best views, the flights with the most convenient schedules — they fill up. And the couples who got there first? They started the conversation months before you did.

There’s also the matter of your wedding date. The time of year you say “I do” matters more than most couples realize — because destinations have seasons, and even paradise looks different depending on when you arrive.

My general guidance: begin the honeymoon planning conversation at least six to nine months before your wedding day. Your future self will be genuinely grateful.

Your Honeymoon Budget Shouldn’t Be What’s Left Over

You’re not alone — most people have no idea what a honeymoon actually costs, and that’s not a criticism. It’s just the truth.

I’ve had couples come to me with a beautiful destination in mind and a budget that would barely cover the airfare. That’s the conversation we’ll have early — before anyone falls in love with an idea that isn’t quite within reach.

Part of my job is to help you understand what your honeymoon vision actually requires financially — and either build toward that number, or suggest an equally wonderful alternative that delivers the same feeling at a price that works for you.

My goal is to always honor your budget. We just need to be realistic about what it can deliver — so there are no surprises, and only pinch me moments when you arrive.

All-Inclusive Wins the Popular Vote — But Other Enticing Options Exist Too

There’s a reason all-inclusive tops the list for most honeymooners. The ease. The simplicity. The everything-is-handled feeling from the moment you arrive. For many couples it’s not just the popular choice — it’s genuinely the perfect one.

But just because it’s popular doesn’t mean it’s for you. Some couples are drawn to the romance of European cities, the magic of a river cruise, or the exotic beauty of Hawaii — and for those couples, a different kind of journey might deliver something even more meaningful.

The most important thing? The right choice is always the one that feels most like you as a couple. That’s what we’ll uncover together.

Let’s Give Your Honeymoon the Attention It Deserves

Right now your wedding planning is in full swing. You’re meeting with the florist, brainstorming with your photographer, locking in your venue, and checking things off a list that seems to grow faster than it shrinks.

And somewhere on that list? Your honeymoon deserves to be right alongside all of it. Not an afterthought. Not whatever’s left over. A real, intentional place at the planning table from the very beginning.

It’s the first trip of your married life. It deserves to be extraordinary.
